Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
