The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
When I walk into the space, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he clings to throughout our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His determination and natural ability convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken directly to the training centre. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.
An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival
This move set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Off-field noise are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his spells at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions
At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. After defeating England in their own country…,” he says, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”
Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
