The Himalayan nation's Political Scene Sees Significant Partnership Formed By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
