Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

Price was best known for his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the pastel suits that featured in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "the song Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."

His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he started his work in menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse elements of men's and women's fashion along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Dramatic Impact: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
