The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 lives were killed and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen shot at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local police are describing as a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were taken to the hospital.

The victims are yet to be officially identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Described as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She described the events leading up to the attack, stating they were standing when the gunfire began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
