Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” the coach said. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

NYPD issued surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.

“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but It is reassuring that his outcome looks very positive.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with an injury to his shoulder that needed an operation.

He signed with New York as a new signing in March and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
